5th Gen "I AM NEW HERE BUT HAVE A QUESTION" thread
Thanks pmohr, that's so awesome that you found a picture of it, nice! there it is!!
but what is LIM and UIM? IIRC? I'm a newbie when it comes to working on my car so I don't know.
and is KS replacement something a newbie like me can do? I did replace the fuel filter on my own, based on that ability do you think I can do the KS or will I need special tools and microscopic hands to get in there for this one?

UIM - Upper Intake Manifold.
IIRC - If I Recall Correctly.
There's a sticky that explains acronyms, BTW.
You don't need small hands if you do the job the proper way, removing the intake manifolds.
I have a 2002 Maxima 3.5 6 speed that is in desperate need of a passenger side CV axle. I have bought two and had to return them both due to both axles being around 3 inches too short. I finally took it to a shop where they spent a couple of days going through the same problem I had. They eventually sent it out for a rebuild and it sounds worse now then before. Have any of you had this problem before? What is the correct part number for this axle. Thanks.
I know with the PAC ROEM-NIS2 you can attenuate (adjust) the electrical flow to the speakers. So you can adjust the overall volume. I used one when I installed my AVIC D2 and it works just fine.
In regards to the fitment issue, there is a gap around the AVIC between it and the GXE trim piece. The reason why is because the AVIC trim piece piece is too big; it won't fit inside the opening of the GXE. There is also a problem with fitment at the bottom of the GXE where it mates up against the HVAC controls. It doesn't clip together well at the bottom, causing a gap.
To eliminate the gap around the AVIC I carefully cut down and then filed down the sides of the AVIC trim piece so that it fit through and flush with the opening of the GXE trim piece.
Procedure
1. Tape a piece of paper to the front of GXE unit and from the inside trace the size of the opening of the GXE onto the paper.
2. Tape the tracing to the AIVC trim piece that goes around the AVIC headunit, making sure that the tracing is centered on the trim piece.
3. Using a utility or exacto knife, trace/etch the outside dimension of the tracing onto the AVIC trim piece.
4. Cut away and file down the sides of the trim piece until it fits inside and flush with the face of the GXE unit. File lightly when you get close to the etched line because as soon as you go beyond the etched line you're toast.
5. Once the filing and sanding was done I attached the trim piece to the GXE unit with epoxy.
Now you have a custom fit piece that eliminates the big gap and is as pretty close to factory fitment as you're going to get anywhere.

I really appreciate it. You cleared up the major issues I was having installing the AVIC.
Anybody?
I need the PR intake template. Ive found some for the 4th gens(THE TEMPLATE) and not sure if it will work on the 5th gen.(can someone confirm) Ive found the instructions on the install process and it shows where the template goes but not an actual full size pic where i can copy and print out my own. Where can I find one? I bought the intake used and asked the seller of it but he doesnt have it either, and Im not gonna just cut into the car.

after hours of playing around with the axle... i took the inner boot off only ito find out one of the bearings had popped off the knuckle that fits into the transmission causing the binding preventing the wheel assembly from mounting correctly.... the bearring grease was milk chocolate and not thick as grease
my question now becomes, do i replace the axle ***. and does a new assembly come with the bearings mounted?
thanks,
john

I can get you the part number, but you realize it's going to be $500+ from Nissan, and they'll most likely get it from Raxles.
Call Raxles, see if they have any. They're a rather difficult item to find, unless you buy used or find a 6MT in a junkyard.

With a new axle, you don't have to do anything to it other than install it.
Well you could put it back together, if you didn't destroy the boot all you'd need is another clamp for it. If you want to replace the whole axle, you could just get it from whatever auto parts store, really.

Here's a couple pics. The boot seems in to be in good shape per eye inspection, but the color of the grease leads me to believe there's water leak.

You could always get a new boot and clamps, and a tube of axle grease. Spray everything down, then put it all back together.
I think i am just going to play it safe and replace it being it's tore apart, and i've had an issue with the wheel bearring about a yr ago.

The B-pipe goes in between the converter and the muffler.
That has a two piece B-pipe, it's the top two.
The B-pipe goes in between the converter and the muffler.
The B-pipe goes in between the converter and the muffler.

The Y is before the converter. It goes exhaust manifolds, Y, catalytic converter, B, muffler.
I need advice on exhaust components for my sisters Maxima. It is an auto 2003 GLE.
The rear section was rusted out about 8 months ago so I replaced that with the HKS rear section. The pipe I bolted the rear section to (b-pipe?) did appear to be on it's last leg as well.
Recently she had taken the car for service and she was told the "front pipe with flex tube" was leaking. I am guessing that this is the "Y" pipe.
So I would like to install some stainless piping to get rid of this factory system that is rusting out. The problem is that I have searched and cannot find anyone that sells these peices for the 03.
She does not want the car to be much louder so the cats must stay along with any resonaters. Can anyone point me in the right direction for any of these products?
Cattman has nothing on his site for this year, and I have searched and came up empty.
Will I be better off doing a custom pipe?? The Y-pipe looks like it will not be much fun to make without a jig

Warpspeed has one, too.
FWIW I searched 'y pipe' in the 5th gen forum, here was the very first result:
http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...highlight=pipe
Did you call Brian Catts? He may not have them listed on his site, but IME his site isn't updated very often.

I was under the impression that the 03's were a bit different and it looks to be for an 02 for the warpspeed one.
I just had a new 2004 6 speed manual transmission w/hlsd along with a new clutch installed into my 2003 maxima today. I had the transmission shop use half redline mt-90 and half mtl transmission fluids. I also had them install my short shifter (2 piece unit) as well.
The first test drive left me pretty unimpressed. The shifting action is extremely notchy, and several gears are difficult to engage. Should I be worried about this, or is this normal with a new transmission, and will ease up after a break-in period? Should I have waited to install the short shifter after a break-in period?

Remove the STS adapters, see if it gets any better.
FWIW it shouldn't be extremely notchy, but it definitely shouldn't be hard to get in gear. Which gears? 1/2/R?
It's possible they didn't adjust the clutch pedal correctly. What type of clutch?
I found that 1st gear is difficult to shift into from a dead start, 4th gear is very notchy, and shifting down from 4th to 3rd was very notchy as well.
I'm not sure what type of clutch they installed, it's just one that the transmission shop happened to have on the shelf. They called me up when they took the transmission out to let me know the clutch had alot less than 50% remaining. The only thing I noticed with the new clutch is that it has a lighter required pedal effort to engage.

So I took my max into the dealer to get a diagnostics run on it. The service guy told me I needed some kind of induction cleaning that would cost me about $150. He said the car would drive like a whole new car. Sounds kinda like bullsh!t to me but I thought I'd get someone else's opinion. Any suggestions?

Looks like I am going to need a full catback repair as well.
as pictures show everything from my rear-cat out to my muffler(some bastard sold me that piece of crap like 2 years ago)
Needs replacing.
I kind of need of need to bring this one in with out selling a kidney.
Was thinking of ordering everything from warpspeed.
Repair guy says he can save the cat that is rear of the flex tube, but I figure it would be better to just get a new one with the y-pipe.
But the flex tube snapped off the cat, so I need to replace that converter too.
So my question is, is warpspeed decent for a one-stop solution? Or am I better just going to them for the y-pipe?
Is it worth trying to salvage the cat rear of the flex-tube
2000 Maxima California Spec (Does not need to pass cali emissions, I am in vermont)
Looks like I'll need:
Rear-cat
Flex tube back
(cat behind flex tube might be salvagable)
New Muffler
Would like the car to not get ridiculously louder, so I am guessing I need a resonator in the new muffler
Gah.
as always, any help would be appreciated!
1.) How much is this going to run?
2.) Warpspeed or dave B.?
3.) Worth saving the cat rear of the flex-tube?
4.) Where to go for muffler?
5.) The love of a maxima is priceless, right?

Anyway, you're saying the induction cleaning thing is bullsh*t too, correct? He said it would clean the carbon or something from the motor and make it run a lot better. If that's the truth then I'm down for doing it but it sounds sketch. Thanks for the info, Progress.
As far as the love of a Maxima being priceless, that's what I keep telling myself.
I've heard a lot of good things about Warpspeed. I'm looking to put one of their Y-pipes on my car soon. I'd go ahead and replace everything if you're going to take the time and money to do it. Otherwise you'll probably have to replace it later.

I called up warpspeed and the owner is going to call me back in a bit to see if he has everything in stock.
Otherwise I guess I will have to go cattman and their complete system, which I hope includes the 2nd converter. (I guess only the front most converter is still intact. )
So this is this piece that I am unsure of what I should be ordering. Is this included in the "catback" exhaust?
I was getting p0430 codes before all this happened with the muffler.
Dallas from Warpspeed said he'll send me some stock stuff he has lying around if he can find all the pieces, I am just a little nervous I am not going to get everything I need.
he also said that his 99 kit could fit but there needed to be an additional bend to get the pipe over the axle. Not sure if the shop I am at now could do it, so I am looking for something that will work without hassle. That being said I don't want to put replacement parts on that will need to be replaced again in a couple years
See pics for the questions:
So where the circle is is the 2nd cat that was connected to flex tube. I have a cali spec vehicle, but OBD inspection for emissions.

Quickie STS
i did the quickie STS today on my 6-spd. for sure an improvement, shortens the throw a full inch , also makes the shifts alot firmer, however do to the loss of leverage at the lever it translates to a "stiffer" feel across the board. Just wanted to drop my 2 cents ...great mod thanks again!!! to Maxima.org
