the main cat has to be hot to do its job...the precats do the job while the main cat heats up. without precats, within minutes, the main cat is doing its job and you can pass emissions.

and now days, cars are so advanced that they are constantly changing the air/fuel mixture. even with no cats, the emissions are very minimal.

my 00 with ypipe and straight pipe (no cats)

Awwww yeah, that's it right there. I like that, a lot. hopefully I'll get something somewhat similar (keeping my cat.) I'm definitely going to order the y-pipe this week.

Man, thanks again!

Major hesitation and Engine Knock

Hey all - I have been having some problems with my 2000 Maxima SE. Basically, as the RPMs get up to 3000 it starts sputtering and slowly goes up but the car basically isnt going anywhere. I've also noticed that I started hearing engine knock when I gas it (not even that hard). My engine light is not on and I have no idea what the problem could be.

What I've done:

Replaced MAF sensor and had it re-programmed, sensor was the 2Y001 - I noticed the car was pulling smoother and more powerful but I'm still having the problems when I get to 3000 rpms.

I've also replaced 3 ignition coils because the care was mis-firing (its fine now) the coils I replaced were closest to the radiator and front of the car.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be?

Thanks in advance

Addco makes a quality product. Granted, I've only seen them used on Crown Victorias, as that was what I used to drive, but everyone I knew with one was very satisfied.

a y-pipe is pointless on a 3.5 since it doesnt eliminate the pre-cats. you need full headers.

hmmm...well, dont ahve the money for that.

Another question. Not sure of what my car came with exactly. Just bought it from speedymax (love the car, btw) and it's lowered a good bit. Not sure how much and also, the roads around here arent great. The ride is kinda rough and bouncy, which i know is to be expected, when going over more moderate bumps so are there specific shocks I could get to perhaps take some of the 'bounce' out? What about bushings?

I know there is a thread on the org that has all OEM wheel specifications, but i cant find it right now for the life of me.......

Could someone help me out with the link or just tell me for sure what the offset is on a 2003 SE 17" six spoke wheel is? I could have sworn the thread I saw on here said +40, but I have now seen a couple places that said +45.

Thank guys.

Greetings,
I just purchased a 5 speed 2000 Maxima SE with 90,000 miles. It had been pulling to the right so I took it to a trusted alignment shop, and they said my rear axle was bent. (most likely from an acident, they showed me where it had been hit and repainted). Rear tires were toeing badly with only 4/10 of tread left on the outside of the rear tire. Most expensive cost of the repair is the factory axle @ $600. I found a junkyard with a complete rear axle from a 2002 Maxima.

My question: Will the 02 axle fit my car?

Thanks,
Alex

SE tails on 03

I've searched for 15 mins & can't find a definite answer - is swapping in 00/01 SE tails into an 03 a direct plug in or is there a wiring/harness mod that has to occur?

Thanks

Follow up question:

Since I have to replace the rear axle, would it be wise to replace the trailing arms? In your opinion what other critical parts would I need to replace?

Many thanks for your quick help!

Cliffs:
When you get the 00-01 taillights, get the 00-01 harness as well.

Another noob with a much discussed question. Tried searching on this, but haven't seen the topic come up a lot lately, so here goes:

I'm thinking of getting an 02 or 03 Max. I live in NYC, and would hate to have to worry about parking on the street (already paranoid because I have a motorcycle). Anyway, are they still stealing headlights, or has this been all but eliminated since HID prices fell and Nissan issued the anti-theft kit?

Thanks.

I haven't heard about many thefts in the last few years compared to 3-4 years ago....the falling price of aftermarket HID retro kits is making it less profitable to steal headlights, probably...so it's not as much worth the risk of a felony theft ($>1000) to steal ballasts that you can just buy for like 50 bucks these days.

not saying it doesn't still happen...just saying there hasn't been alot of talk hereabout it in a while.....

Might as well do the trailing arms while you're under there...frankly mightalso want to do the springs/struts while you have it all apart, but probably ot necessary

car rough start

Hello all, my father owns a 2003 Maxima SE, we were replacing the back brakes today and yesterday, (new rotors and pads) we did not finish Tuesday so the car sat for a day on jack stands. Earlier tonight we start the car to go drive and break in the new breaks, and the car does not want to start, it cranks hard, and fires a few times, then eventually fires up to a loud knocking noise and whole engine was shaking on the mounts, then slowly the knocking goes away, and that notorious purr returns. Car has 107k miles, has been maintained religiously(oil changes ect) and is never abused whatsoever. My only thinking is that the ECU took a Sh** or shorted out and had to learn the timing over again. This has never happened. Runs great now, just wanted some ideas of what happened. Thanks everyone!

sounds like it wasnt getting fuel from the car sitting over night with the rear up in the air. dont think its an ECU problem since it doesnt seem anything could have caused it.

OK, this may seem like a dumb question, but I am considering an 02-03 Maxima for my next car and was wondering, does the steering wheel tilt higher than the 01 maximas? I drove one of them and my only issue was that the steering wheel literally set on my lap. My seem like a small issue, but it made getting in and out tough and ruined what otherwise was a specatacular driving experience. i drove an 02 a couple years ago, but can't remember how the wheel sit in it. Thanks in advance for answering my stupid question LOL

Quick question. Is the AT from a 2001 AE a locking differential transmission?
If it is, is it a direct swap into a 2000 (non locking differential)?

Do you happen to know if it's a direct swap without any modification.

We are talking about the auto-tragic transmission here.

I took a look at the two FSMs but don't have experience comparing part numbers and wiring diagrams.

I need to be certain that the wiring to the TCU are identical and that the axles are identical.
Anyone mind helping out?

(Should I open a new thread? )

Thanks Sooner..dont want to make it a big issue or anything, just seeing if anyone knew by the appearance. I saw that on his page but...... after researching i have found no axis's with the 16 spokes. The closest on the axis website for instance are the penta's and they are 20 spoke. Not sure maybe they are an older model?! lol
